Here is the road which Jeremy Clarkson told everyone was the best in the world. However, this is not entirely true. The road is not the best in the world. There is far too much traffic for inspired driving. There are many tourist buses, cyclists and other cars. In addition, the curves are often far too sharp. Sometimes you will be forced to reverse to get around. All of this takes away the joy of driving.
The pass is very high. The view from the top is spectacular. Probably one of the most powerful views from any mountain pass in Europe. This makes Passo dello Stelvio an important route to check off your bucket list. And then never drive it again.
Passo dello Stelvio is located near Bormio. In Bormio take the SS38 road. Set the navigation to Passo dello Stelvio, and the rest will sort itself out. At the top you continue towards Gomagoi. Hard to miss. Keep in mind that the road is so high up that it has its own climate. Before you get started, check the weather at the top, so you don't run into a blizzard. The best time is August. Also, please note that there is so much snow here that the pass often doesn't open for traffic until June. Check ahead.
