One of the very best driving roads in the world
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road (in German Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße) is the highest surfaced mountain pass road in Austria. It connects the state of Salzburg in the north with Carinthia in the south. The highest point is Fuscher Törl at a staggering 2 428 meters.
The road was built in the early 1930s and is today one of the most important tourist attractions in Austria. The road is only open during day time, from early May to November. The road is closed during the winter.
The mountain pass is a toll road, and it costs just under 40 euros for a day pass with a car. You pay at the toll booth when you enter, either from the north or the south entrance.
Approaching from the north is considered the more fun way to drive this mountain pass. Going uphill on endless turns puts a smile on every driver's face. Add insane scenery and pool table perfect asphalt and you have a road that is one of the very best in the world.
A perfect companion on your next road trip to the most beautiful country in the world.
