The Kehlsteinhaus (known as the Eagle's Nest in English-speaking countries) is a Third Reichera building erected atop the summit of the Kehlstein, a rocky outcrop that rises above Obersalzberg near the town of Berchtesgaden. It was used exclusively by members of the Nazi Party for government and social meetings.
Today the building is owned by a charitable trust and serves as a restaurant offering indoor dining and an outdoor beer garden. It is a popular tourist attraction to those who are attracted by the historical significance of the "Eagle's Nest". The road has been closed to private vehicles since 1952 because it is too dangerous, but the house can be reached on foot (in two hours) from Obersalzberg, or by bus from the Documentation Center there.
Tours of the site can be booked through the official website. Due to concern about neo-Nazis and post-war Nazi sympathizers, no external guides are permitted to conduct tours. Also, there is a very strict policy about videography and offensive speech in the area. A certain gesture with your right arm will get you into serious trouble (a night in jail), so is impersonating any of the Nazi leadership.
Our recommendation is to park your car at the Documentation Centre and take the bus to the top. The last part up you do via the elevator. At the top, you can enjoy the magnificent view and a meal in the sun.
A perfect companion on your next road trip to the most beautiful country in the world.
