Summer is coming up! And so is your annual road trip to the south of Europe with your supercar. Finally! After a long winter of hibernation, start your Porsche, Ferrari or Lamborghini and enjoy the good life in continental Europe. Welcome! Your presence is much requested.
In this blog post, I want to give you some great advice if you live in northern Europe, Scandinavia or the Baltic countries. Advice that I can comfortably support since I have dedicated my life to road trips in Europe with a supercar.
Have fantastic roads, and much less congestion than the famous Autobahn in Germany. It is also much more fun. If you live in Scandinavia, consider taking a ferry to Gdansk or Swinoujscie (hard to spell and pronounce, I know), and continue your trip from there.
Poland has the most modern highway system in Europe, thanks to massive investment from the European Union over the last decades. This is a great starting point for your next rock star road trip to the Mediterranean in your Ferrari.
There is a gas station chain in Poland and many former Eastern Bloc countries called Orlen. They have the best gas station junk food on the planet. Incredible hot dogs, and a Polish pizza variant called zapiekanka. It is a delightful dish in a baguette with ketchup, lots of cheese, and mushrooms. You will get hooked immediately.
Orlen also has 100 octane juice for your supercar. Furthermore, all gas stations in the former Eastern bloc are brand new. Compare this to the absolute misery of a gas station in Italy.
Use the motorways to take you through the plains of Poland, going south. Crossing the entire country from north to south will take about a day. Then there are two amazing roads to either the Czech Republic or Hungary.
My favourite is the road from Wroclaw, Klodzko and Kudowa Zdroj to the Czech Republic. You can stop in Kudowa Zdroj in Hotel Verde - good parking for your Lamborghini and a decent pizza restaurant. The next morning, you can continue to Prague or Munich.
The other road goes from Kraków through Slovakia to Budapest. Stay at Sheraton Grand in Krakow: perfect parking, and walking distance to the famous city square full of restaurants. The following day, you take E77 through Slovakia towards Budapest, an adorable road.
If you plan to arrive with an expensive car, the best hotel in Prague is Grand Hotel Prague Towers (Former Corinthia). It is outside the very city centre, reasonably priced, has great parking, the rooms have an incredible view of the city, and there is a subway station in the hotel complex.
It will take you ten minutes to go by subway to the city centre, where there are all the restaurants and nightlife. Your evening will be better knowing that your car is perfectly safe. Then you can take an Uber back to the hotel at night.
This hotel is used in the James Bond movie Casino Royale for the poker tournament. It is not located in Montenegro, as in the film, but in the spa and wellness-oriented resort of Karlovy Vary, close to the German border. Consider Grand Hotel Pupp going further west towards Germany.
I was sent here as a fourteen-year-old in the late 1980s by my parents for boarding school in the summer. The plan was to learn German, instead I learned how to drink beer and kiss girls.
Anyway, the city on the Bodensee is super pretty. There is a good hotel here called Bayerischer Hof, not to be confused with Bayerischer Hof in Munich. The hotel is a five-star hotel and reasonably priced. It is a bit worn down, but the location is great, and they also have good parking for your supercar.
You have the restaurant Eil Gut Halle just a hundred meters away. The billionaire owner of the restaurant has his car collection on display. You will be having wienerschnitzel next to a Ferrari F40 and a Mercedes-AMG ONE.
There are two fantastic hotels in Austria to spend the night on your way to the Mediterranean.
Taking the Grossglockner high mountain road? It is an amazing mountain pass in the centre of the country. You will end up near the city of Lienz. Here you have Grand Hotel Lienz, a proper Disneyland location at the foot of the mountain. Dinner on their terrace near the stream is amazing.
Also, Velden am Wörthersee is incredible. Here I recommend Schlosshotel Velden is an equally picturesque and beautiful location as the hotel mentioned above. Plenty of great restaurants at the lake.
Almost there! But not quite. Bolzano is a proper gem in northern Italy, close to the Austrian border. There are two hotels here that I can strongly recommend.
Schloss Hotel Korb is located on a hillside overlooking the town, amid vineyards. This is an extremely charming four-star boutique hotel with an incredible view. Great restaurant, too.
The other option is Castel Hörtenberg. We use a five-star hotel in the centre of the town for our Dolomites tours. You will understand when you arrive. Enjoy!
There is nothing better than a proper road trip with a supercar in Europe. My final advice is not to plan your tour too much. Leave room to be impulsive along the way. Also, don't be afraid of staying in a two-star gasthaus, and don't miss small villages on the way.
The beds are equally comfortable, and a cold beer after a day of driving your loud, exotic supercar will taste fantastic.
Take a picture of your stove before leaving. This way, "Did I turn my stove off?" is always answered, no matter how paranoid you are.
Bring both car keys. One for you and one for your companion. Did your loved one forget something from the car? Then they can easily retrieve it without asking you for the key. Also, keys can get lost along the way.
Use the room safe. Put your Rolex, Patek Philippe, passports and car keys here before dinner. Get an Omega Moonswatch for your crazy nights out, wherever you are.
Always have reserve batteries for your car keys. Most keys use a battery called C2032. Easy to get in any supermarket during the day, hard to get an early morning at a hotel with a dead key.
Get yourself a Fulli. It is a transponder you place on your windscreen that whisks you past all the toll roads in Italy, France and Spain. It is connected to your credit card. No need to stop at the toll booths no more. Click here to order.
